Northeast Kingdom

from Northeast Kingdom by Sarah Winchester

/

lyrics

don't be like me
don't be burdened,
don't be poor.
all the crows
have descended here.

I was a cook
my best years marked
on the door.
now i'm living off of iodine,
bygone purple hills, and table scraps.

keep from traveling this close.
bus lit up like a struck tree's never shone.
counting spaces,
but you're really counting miles.
hold my place
until the why
'til the why.

country ruins and
ancient stone wall siege.
northeast kingdom
is never heavenly.

you don't love you
you make a mockery
of pearls, and perfect gaits,
and symmetry.

it's like i said,
don't give yourself to any man.
and this little house is just
a bookmark.

the rocks i keep
fill my pockets
when they can.

now i'm sleeping in an easy chair
in my head i'm writing paragraphs.
